About me

Hi, my name is Gina Carey.
I am an empathetic Speech and Language Therapist with over 20 years’ experience supporting people experiencing changes in their communication to develop their skills and confidence through person-centred rehabilitation. Although I have worked with people of all ages, much of my clinical experience has focused on adults living with complex and life-changing conditions.
Throughout my career, I have developed specialist experience in neurological rehabilitation, including working as the Lead Speech and Language Therapist for stroke neurorehabilitation within a regional comprehensive stroke centre. I have also worked as a senior therapist within the specialist regional neuroscience centre and in a variety of community settings, supporting people living with a range of neurological conditions including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease. My clinical work has been complemented by a strong interest in the underpinning evidence base and active involvement in neuroplasticity research and its application within neurorehabilitation.
In addition, I have held a senior Speech and Language Therapy role within a nationally recognised specialist oncology centre and have extensive experience in oncology rehabilitation, particularly supporting people before, during and following surgery, radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy for head and neck cancer or other cancer presentations that impact on communication abilities. This includes specialist experience in laryngectomy rehabilitation.
Alongside my Speech and Language Therapy practice, I am currently in the final year of training as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) psychotherapist. This has strengthened my understanding of the relationship between communication, thoughts, emotions, behaviour and psychological wellbeing, and allows me to bring an increasingly integrated perspective to my work. In addition to my counselling qualification, this perspective is particularly valuable when working with people who have voice disorders or dysfluency such as stammering, or where communication difficulties can have a significant impact on confidence, self-esteem, emotional wellbeing and how people experience themselves and their interactions with others.
My approach is holistic, compassionate, collaborative and strongly person-centred. I believe that effective therapy is about more than addressing a particular symptom or impairment. It is about understanding what matters to each individual person, recognising their strengths, and working together towards meaningful goals that can make a genuine difference to their quality of life.
Why I established Carey Therapies
After more than 20 years working as a specialist Speech and Language Therapist within the NHS, I wanted to create a service that allows me to offer people the time, flexibility and personalised support that can sometimes be difficult to provide within a busy healthcare system.
Throughout my career, I have supported people living with a wide range of communication difficulties, including aphasia and dysphasia, voice difficulties, laryngectomy, stammering and other changes to communication.
I have seen first-hand that communication difficulties can affect far more than the ability to speak. They can influence confidence, relationships, work, independence and emotional wellbeing.
Carey Therapies was established to provide specialist, individualised therapy that considers the whole person, not simply the communication difficulty. By combining my experience in Speech and Language Therapy with my additional training in counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy, I aim to help people develop greater confidence, reconnect with others and feel more in control of their communication.
My goal is simple:
to provide expert therapy with a supportive, compassionate and genuinely person-centred approach.
